Legitimate Abortion

Of all the “social issues,” abortion is the one I am the most passionate about.  Everyone has the same rights at the beginning of their life, and I believe the beginning of life is the point at which they become a distinct organism (i.e. the point of fertilization).  I recognize that that point is debatable, but I haven’t seen or thought of any better arguments.  Therefore, I consider abortion murder.

Because of Todd Akin, it is now an issue people are talking about the media and the left want people to talk about to distract from the more important issue of the economy.  While politicians who are campaigning shouldn’t talk about this sort of thing, I’m just a lowly blogger, so I am going to.

At one point, I was uncertain about whether or not abortion in abnormal circumstances (such as rape) was justified .  I have come to the conclusion that the only justifiable abortion is one that is necessary to save the life of the mother.  The fetus didn’t rape its mother, so I don’t see why it should be punished.  In other instances (such as those in which the fetus has a birth defect or something), I still don’t think abortion is an appropriate response.  I mean, people with birth defects are people just as much as people without birth defects.  If the parent(s) absolutely cannot raise the product of their actions, they can always put it up for adoption.  Being adopted or going through foster homes is preferable to not having the chance to live (and the child can simply kill him- or herself if it would rather not be alive).

Also, Akin should probably step down.  It appears that this is something that will hurt the Republicans, even though it shouldn’t.
